Pregnant ladies , please take note how Zika Virus in Singapore will affect your unborn baby.
Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause a birth defect call microcephaly, as well as other sever fetal brain defect. Microcephaly is a birth defect where a baby’s head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age. Babies with microcephaly often have smaller brains that might not have developed properly.
Singapore’s health ministry advises pregnant women with Zika virus symptoms , as well as those with male partners who are Zika virus positive, to be tested for Zika virus infection. This is regardless of whether they have been to Zika cluster affected areas. Symptoms of Zika include fever and rash and other symptoms such as red eyes or joint pain.
Testing is not routinely recommended for other pregnant women who do not have symptoms of Zika and whose male partners are not Zika positive, MOH added.
Testing for pregnant women as referred by their doctors, and who meet these criteria, is free at the public healthcare institutions.
Don’t forget to take preventive action if you are the lucky one. Insect Screen will be an affordable choice.
